SEAGATE TECHNOLOGY introduced the Barracuda XT desktop hard drive, a 7200 RPM product featuring 2 TB of storage capacity and a blazing fast serial ATA (SATA) interface. The 3.5 inch desktop drive is the first to feature a SATA 6Gb/s interface and meets the demands of gaming, digital video-environments and other storage hungry desktop computing applications, while delivering a high performance.
The hard drive is a four-platter drive featuring a density of 368 Gigabytes per square inch, delivers burst speeds of up to 6 Gigabytes per second for all PC applications. It maintains backward compatibility with the SATA 3Gb/second and SATA 1.5Gb/second interfaces and uses the same cables and connectors as previous SATA generations.
An expansion bridge integrated into the the motherboard helps achieve real SATA 6Gb/s throughput to support bandwidth hungry applications. ASUS was the first to market a similarly configured motherboard, the company’s P7P55D Premium which began to be shipped in August. The new Gigabyte P55 series GA-P55-extreme motherboards are also being shipped.
