A complete styling departure from the model it replaces, the new Elise promises more practicality, which means no acrobatics necessary just to get in. "We worked very hard on getting the 2015 Elise exactly right; it's our entry level car so it needs to give a proper introduction to the Lotus driving experience," said Bahar. But despite major updates in liveability the next Elise keeps the formula of ultra low weight (1,095kg) and a 2.0-litre four-pot. The charged engine will deliver up to 316bhp for a very similar power-to-weight ratio to the 611bhp Elite.
So 0-100kph in 4.3 seconds makes perfect sense and a 270kph top speed doesn't disappoint either. You'll be able to spec it with a twin-clutch tranny or a proper manual and clutch pedal combo.
The prices for 2015 Lotus Elise will be around £40 000. However, the current model is just £27 450.
