Laptop batteries power cars promising greener tomorrow

Yeah you heard it right !!! Laptop batteries for running cars. The world's largest consumer electronics maker, Japan's Panasonic Corp has developed a technology to use standard lithium-ion cells used in Laptops to give power now to power electric cars.

As the awareness of Global warming and the pollution are rising, the demand and need for electric vehicles with more efficiency and performance are also at its peak. With this new technology, Panasonic could manufacture ( from their existing plants ) these cells for cars for half the cost of what it is for the batteries designed only for electric vehicles.

These newly developed batteries can be used @ homes too as an inverter or something to store electricity generated from solar panels and fuel cells.

The high-energy module is constructed from 140 pieces of 18650-type lithium-ion battery cells - seven serially connected rows with each row made of 20 parallel connected battery cells. This structure allows for avoiding serious loss in the system performance such as system shutdown even if some individual cells fail.

With this decrease in the cost of production of these cells, the cost of electric cars too would come down which were high particularly due to the cost of lithium-ion batteries manufactured for them. ( Mitsubishi's i-MiEV, the world's first mass-produced electric car costs $51,000 at present ).

The Future looks Green buddies!!!
